The district honored numerous students for their high school success, including 21 of the 24 International Baccalaureate students who will also collect up to 756 college hours for earning the IB diploma.

Local scholarship offers accounted for about $1.15 million of the 2013 haul, according to Kay Ray, Longview High School’s coordinator of college scholarships and financial aid.

“In the five years I have coordinated scholarships at Longview High School, the Class of 2013 has – by far – exceeded the previous senior classes in scholarship awards received,” Ray said. “In 2009, my first year on the job, the senior class received $1,519.424 in scholarship awards. The Class of 2013 has more than doubled that amount.”

With the offers, the Class of 2013 also bettered the 2012 class by more than $1 million. Some of the highlights of the Class of 2013:

Andrew O’Connor – received more than $750,000 in scholarship offers, including Purdue University’s Steven C. Beering Scholarship, valued at $500,000;

Christopher Yu – Longview High School’s 2013 valedictorian was accepted to 15 universities, including scholarship offers from Cornell University and University of Pennsylvania;

Taylor Yuen – The 2013 salutatorian received numerous scholarship offers, including the Northeastern University Dean’s Scholarship, Texas A&M University’s President’s Endowed Scholarship and Baylor University’s President’s Gold Scholarship;

LeGrand Northcutt – received the Baylor University President’s Gold and Invitation to Excellence scholarships, and a scholarship from Washington and Lee University;

DeWarren Timmins – received scholarship offers from Abilene Christian University, Austin College, Stephen F. Austin University, Midwestern State University, University of North Texas and St. John’s University, which tendered him its Academic Achievement Award.

International Baccalaureate has scheduled its annual robing ceremony for May 30. Longview High School commencement exercises are set for 7:30 p.m. on May 31 at Lobo Stadium.
